Hi, and thanks for taking the time out to speak with us here at Musicology.
Firstly congratulations on the new single I Want Everything, it is a great track. Can you elaborate a little on the subject matter behind the song?
I Want Everything is a fairly retrospective and reflective track in its nature. While we were writing for this release, Felix was going through a phase in which he was trying to find out who he was and who he wanted to be. During this he ended up neglecting some important people that were close to him, and realised that he was happier before he started searching.
You have a new EP coming out soon. How would you describe it for those who haven’t had the pleasure of listening to it yet?
This EP steps the production up from our last one and we think our sound has developed more so. We’ve also spent a while longer writing these songs and putting them together, and just going through the whole demo/pre-production process a bit more. The songs still retain our dynamic energy and tonality, but also deliver a more cohesive end result.
What does the new material say about where you are all at in your lives right now?
I’m not sure if it’s literally representative of everyone’s lives in terms of lyrical content, but I think we’re always striving to express ourselves in different ways, and we’re all pursuing different things. These pursuits are touched upon in the new material and thematically I think it all comes together in this EP. Our tonality and writing is driven by each of us having different influences and styles, so we’re all kind of pushing each other to do different stuff.
Recording is never an easy process but you guys had a bout of bubonic plague and survived to tell the tale?
Yeah Felix was really sick prior to recording and this only worsened through the five days. However, we actually all managed to get super sick during the whole process and while this made everything 1000x harder, it meant we couldn’t be complacent and we ended up pushing ourselves harder throughout it all. At the end of it, Felix managed to get all his vocals done in the last 4 hours of our studio time too.
In and around the time of writing and recording, were there any particular artists inspiring you that (even indirectly) found its way into the style you were aiming for?
As strange as a mix it is, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard plus Arctic Monkeys were heavy on rotation for us. I think we all chilled out some nights listening to Childish Gambino’s Awaken My Love and some Mac Demarco tracks too. I think there’s probably a little bit of all of those in different ways creepin’ into the sounds.
What does the rest of 2017 have install for you guys?
We're dropping a new song pretty soon - the next single off our EP which is called The More You know! Releases March 31! We've also got a few shows and announcements to make it all happen! Lets just say new music is Always on the horizon...
