Hi and thanks for taking the time out to speak with us at Musicology.
Congratulations on the awesome new single Seasons. Can you elaborate on what the tune is about and the inspiration behind it?
The whole song was based around that one riff that repeats itself throughout. After the riff was found we had to come up with a catchy verse and chorus in order to keep the poppy vibes going. We all sat down together and tried to find some easy, sing a long lyrics that would help the song achieve the psych pop feel we were going for.
How is the band dynamic in terms of writing? A collaborative process or are the duties largely undertaken by just a couple of you?
We all came from a background of bands that depended on an individual taking on the whole writing responsibility. For SUN we wanted to incorporate all of our musical ideas, every song is written by all of us as a whole, and that’s what we all enjoy about the band.
On a technical level what is in the kit that creates the washed out surfer / psych vibe?
It definitely consists of a whole lot of verb and delay, on both the vocals and guitars. I think the three of our vocals combining also give it the washed out vibe that we intended on.
You have just come off the back whirlwind tour supporting Ocean Alley. How were your sets received and did the live shows provide a little more refinement of your tunes given the live setting?
We were all amazed by how much positive feedback we received throughout the weekend that we supported Ocean Alley. I think we all expected something to go wrong at least once over the three sets, but we managed to keep it together and probably pull off the three best sets we’ve ever played. It was an exiting feeling.
What factors have you taken from attending gigs as punters to playing live and delivering something that you weren’t seeing performed by other outfits?
I think it’s hard to be so inspired by our favourite artists and not take their influence. A consistent set full of songs that flow into one another is something that we strive for.
What does the rest of 2017 have install for you?
In the months to come we plan on releasing our last recorded single ‘Baby’. We also plan on doing a regional Victorian tour and securing our place within the Melbourne scene. We are very exited for the future!
