Colby Robertson of Siamese

Hi Colby and thanks for taking the time out to speak with us at Musicology.

Firstly congratulations on your EP Code One. How long has the EP been in the works?

he songs on the EP have been in the works for a couple years, but we’ve spent the last few months recording and mixing them. Doing it yourself takes time but we’re happy that it’s a total reflection of our own work and progress.

To draw a parallel, there is a strong Gish (Smashing Pumpkins) vibe to Code One which begs the question, where do your inspirations lie and were there any artists you were listening to at the time of writing / recording?

We only listen to matchbox 20 and matchbox 20 related projects.

In terms of the writing and lyrical content, was there an overarching narrative tying the EP together or an assortment of topics and inspirations that zig zag throughout the record?

hematically it explores facets of contemporary life imagined in a more dystopian version of where we’re at, technologically and socially. Because the songs were written and developed over a fair amount of time, the themes ended up being coincidentally similar when it came to compiling the EP.

Can you give us a little insight to the band dynamic and what creative elements you each bring to the table?

ost of the songs are developed from an idea Tom (guitars, vocals) brings to practice. The basslines (Gere) often drive the direction of the sections that the rhythm section is built up on. All up though, we really just push with our gut – we’ve all been playing together for long enough that we can feel where each other will take a part as we go, then we go back and refine. It’s highly collaborative.

Fortune favours the brave and having the cops called out to your place for a noise compliant while jamming, the police actually joined in with an officer taking over on vocals. Was this not the best noise complaint ever made?

I don’t know, thank god we were white and polite otherwise they probably would have been shittier. Free publicity I suppose.

You have been performing for some time now. Playing alongside the likes of Flyying Colours, Hot Mess and Sweater Curse. Are there elements that you have witnessed in other acts that find their into your own performance craft?

The drive and enthusiasm of other bands behind the scenes really shows where the success comes from. Watching a tight band full of friendly people really keeps you motivated.

Can we expect to see a full length player out soon?

Maybe, keep an ear out.
