A Personal Conversation
Don't fear but celebrate our vulnerability and the dangers of the world around us.
Selki
Hi and thanks for taking the time out to speak with us at Musicology.
Firstly congratulations on the release of your new single Skins. Can you elaborate a little on the subject matter behind the lyrics?
I first started writing Skins as a personal conversation with my younger self. Often, I have come to the realisation that we hide and mask ourselves from fear, a fear of being vulnerable and not being accepted by others and the wider world that surrounds us. The message in Skins is to remind us to let go of the skins and layers we use to protect ourselves. Celebrate our unique and authentic person. And don’t fear but celebrate our vulnerability and the dangers of the world around us. Though we can break, we can also mend and be whole and stronger again.
The video clip is an energetic one. What was the storyboard process for this and the initial concept for the clip?
I didn’t have much of a concept at the start, I guess the intention was just to be fun outrageous me, I didn’t feel like acting out some pretend scene. By chance two of my good photographer mates where in town at once and I wanted to work them. I spoke to them they were both keen and 24 hours later I organised a few hours of room hire borrowed a camera and a heap of outfits from a few friends and then we just got outrageous and had some fun.
Having spent some time abroad, what influences and experiences did you drawn upon that made their way into your new material?
Skins definitely has a lot of European elements. It was recorded and produced in Paris and stylistically I can definitely hear the clean catchy French pop influences.
As a multi-instrumentalist, where do you initially begin when formulating new tracks before developing a track into its final cut?
For Skins and a lot of my old material. It usually starts with myself on keys or guitar writing some ballad. Then I tend to think how I can give it more vibe and maybe a beat. Lately though I’ve been playing more with Abelton so I tend to start with a beat and go from there.
If you could play one international festival, which one would it be and why?
Coachella. I like the name, that and its legendary.
What does the remainder of 2017 have install for Selki?
I have a few gigs in Sydney, a vinyl release with the girl band I am in, in Melbourne. And a Spot at Kennedy's creek music festival and Strawberry Fields.
After that I think I’m going to hit up the West Coast.
