Kim Churchill returns with new single Breakneck Speed, the first taste of his forthcoming album to be released later this year. Written in Quebec during an emotional ‘up’ for Kim, it’s a fitting taste of a newly refreshed, energised Churchill, whose previous single Window To The Sky (from the album Silence/Win) hit #42 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2014. Breakneck Speed is available digitally this Friday April 14 and to coincide with the release, Churchill will be embarking on a string of tour dates this May in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, and Perth in June.
Churchill explained the atmosphere that inspired the track: “’Breakneck Speed’ was born in Quebec City. It was autumn and we were racing around the province through these tunnels of colour that all the maple trees had become. Most days were under this electric blue sky as well. I was kinda on the way up emotionally. I'd been tired for a while. Like a few months... It felt like we had played a bajillion festivals and toured forever. Everything was flying by in a blur that was disorientating. But by the time we had arrived in the Quebec fall, I was out in front again and really felt in awe of the whole world and how fast we were racing through it. Kinda like a top of the world feeling. That song became my celebration of it all.”
At just 26, Kim Churchill has already made some incredible achievements in his time as a professional musician. Recognised as much internationally as in Australia, he has performed headline shows and festivals across the world including Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Montreal Jazz, Telluride Blues and Glastonbury, as well as supporting acts including Billy Bragg and Leo Kottke. It’s a long way from the beginning of his career, when he traversed Australia in a campervan, undertaking a musical journey to share and connect with the Australian musical landscape.
2014 saw Kim release his fourth studio recording Silence/Win, a pre-eminent collection demonstrating a maturity and depth of song writing unparalleled by his previous works. The 2015 single Window to The Sky became an anthem for summer adventures and an instant festival favourite during Churchill’s continued touring both in Australia and abroad, notably selling out headline shows as well as supporting Nahko and the Medicine people throughout Europe and the UK. Window To The Sky was also remixed by French producer The Avener (best known for his ARIA top ten single Fade Out Lines), and has over 1 million views online.
Drawing inspiration from his time in Europe and sojourns to Sri Lanka and Canada, Kim is currently putting the final touches on his next record – due for release in 2017.
Catch Kim Churchill on tour next month as a three-piece band, consisting of Churchill, Michael Hardy (vox/keys/drums) and Tom Myers (drums/vox/percussion), both of whom are multi-instrumentalists in their own right.
